GPRS

GPRS

$99

This innovative new book explains how GPRS (general packet radio service) allows you to expand your GSM networks towards third generation mobile communications to meet the demands of the most-sophisticated mobile data applications. The book concentrates on the interfaces between the known GSM network elements and the new subsystems -- PCU, SGSN, and GGSN -- that come with GPRS. It offers you an in-depth explanation of the extensions and methods of the GSM air interface necessary for GPRS and shows how the channel-oriented GSM is linked to the packet switched GPRS. Moreover, it explains what extensions there are in channel coding, how resources are allocated on the air interface, and how the quick network access necessary for GPRS is made possible.

Coding Theory

Coding Theory

$74.95

One of the most important key technologies for digital communication systems as well as storage media is coding theory. It provides a means to transmit information across time and space over noisy and unreliable communication channels. Coding Theory: Algorithms, Architectures and Applications provides a concise overview of channel coding theory and practice, as well as the accompanying signal processing architectures. The book is unique in presenting algorithms, architectures, and applications of coding theory in a unified framework. It covers the basics of coding theory before moving on to discuss algebraic linear block and cyclic codes, turbo codes and low density parity check codes and space-time codes. Coding Theory provides algorithms and architectures used for implementing coding and decoding strategies as well as coding schemes used in practice especially in communication systems. Feature of the book include:.:; Unique presentation-like style for summarising main aspects; Practical issues for implementation of coding techniques; Sound theoretical approach to practical, relevant coding methodologies; Covers standard coding schemes such as block and convolutional codes, coding schemes such as Turbo and LDPC codes, and space time codes currently in research, all covered in a common framework with respect to their applications. This book is ideal for postgraduate and undergraduate students of communication and information engineering, as well as computer science students. It will also be of use to engineers working in the industry who want to know more about the theoretical basics of coding theory and their application in currently relevant communication systems

Coding for MIMO Communication Systems

Coding for MIMO Communication Systems

$79.95

Coding for MIMO Communication Systems is a comprehensive introduction and overview to the various emerging coding techniques developed for MIMO communication systems. The basics of wireless communications and fundamental issues of MIMO channel capacity are introduced and the space-time block and trellis coding techniques are covered in detail. Other signaling schemes for MIMO channels are also considered, including spatial multiplexing, concatenated coding and iterative decoding for MIMO systems, and space-time coding for non-coherent MIMO channels. Practical issues including channel correlation, channel estimation and antenna selection are also explored, with problems at the end of each chapter to clarify many important topics.:; A comprehensive book on coding for MIMO techniques covering main strategies:; Theories and practical issues on MIMO communications are examined in detail:; Easy to follow and accessible for both beginners and experienced practitioners in the field:; References at the end of each chapter for further reading:; Can be used with ease as a research book, or a textbook on a graduate or advanced undergraduate level course. This book is aimed at advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students, researchers and practitioners in industry, as well as individuals working for government, military, science and technology institutions who would like to learn more about coding for MIMO communication systems.

Near-Capacity Variable-Length Coding

Near-Capacity Variable-Length Coding

$85

Recent developments such as the invention of powerful turbo-decoding and irregular designs, together with the increase in the number of potential applications to multimedia signal compression, have increased the importance of variable length coding (VLC). Providing insights into the very latest research, the authors examine the design of diverse near-capacity VLC codes in the context of wireless telecommunications. The book commences with an introduction to Information Theory, followed by a discussion of Regular as well as Irregular Variable Length Coding and their applications in joint source and channel coding. Near-capacity designs are created using Extrinsic Information Transfer (EXIT) chart analysis. The latest techniques are discussed, outlining radical concepts such as Genetic Algorithm (GA) aided construction of diverse VLC codes. The book concludes with two chapters on VLC-based space-time transceivers as well as on frequency-hopping assisted schemes, followed by suggestions for future work on the topic.:; Surveys the historic evolution and development of VLCs; Discusses the very latest research into VLC codes; Introduces the novel concept of Irregular VLCs and their application in joint-source and channel coding

GPRS Networks

GPRS Networks

$135

GPRS is a packet based wireless communication service that offers data rates from 9.05 up to 171.2 Kbps and continuous connection to the Internet for mobile phone and computer users. GPRS is based on GSM communications and complements existing services such as circuit switched cellular phone connections and the Short Message Service (SMS). GPRS represents the bridge between 2G and 3G mobile telecommunications and is commonly referred to as 2.5G. Implementation of GPRS requires modification of the existing GSM networks in that GSM is a circuit switched technology while GPRS is packet oriented. GPRS enables packet data (the same as is used by an Ethernet LAN, WAN or the Internet) to be sent to and from a mobile station - e.g. mobile phone, PDA or Laptop. WAP and SMS can also be sent using GPRS and individuals working with GPRS need to learn and understand how the mobile stations, the air interface, network architecture, protocol structures and signalling procedures must be modified. GPRS offers much higher data rates than GSM and can be combined with 3G technologies such as EDGE to give even higher bit-rates. It offers many benefits for customers and network operators: such as volume (rather then time) dependent billing and more efficient use of network resources. Due to the worldwide delay in implementing 3G solutions such as CDMA and UMTS the demand for GPRS is still growing. GPRS Networks : Offers detailed information ranging from standards to practical implementation Answers 'how' and 'why' rather than just simply re-stating GPRS specifications Provides comprehensive coverage in a single volume Essential reading for all telecommunications project managers, field engineers, technical staff in network operator and manufacturing organisations, GPRS application and service developers, Datacoms/IT engineers. The comprehensive coverage also makes this a superb reference for students of computer science, telecommunications and electrical engineering.

GPRS in Practice

GPRS in Practice

$130

Professionals quickly discover that, although the technical specifications for GPRS cover all parts of the engineering functions in detail and depth, they are lacking in one important feature; the conceptual framework within which the specifications sit - GPRS in Practice fills this gap. By beginning with an explanation of why GPRS is necessary and describing the core concept of GPRS operations, the TBF (Temporary Block Flow), a revision section then covers the GSM Air Interface with its Radio, Physical and Logical channels and this progressively leads to the GPRS logical channels - what they do and how they do it. The book then moves on to a brief introduction of the GPRS protocol stack which provides a launch pad for a detailed trip into all the layers of this stack, with detailed diagrams and explanations of each layer integrated into an overall understanding of how the GPRS service operates in practice. Provides descriptions of why procedures are specified and then clearly explains how the specifications work in practice  Provides a layered view of the GPRS protocol and deals in detail with each layer separately  Includes numerous acronyms and abbreviations accompanied by their full meaning An invaluable resource for Mobile network operators, Development and deployment engineers and Handset designers.
