Not long ago, the world was awash with venture capital in search of the next Yahoo! or Amazon.com. No product, no experience, no technology, no business plan -- no problem. You could still get $40 million from investors to start up your dot-com. And you could get people to work around the clock for stock options and the promise of millions. Then, around April 2000, it all came crashing down. Smart investors, esteemed analysts, and the business press found themselves asking: Who knew people wouldn't rush out to trade in their U.S. dollars for a virtual currency called Flooz? Who knew people wouldn't blow all their Flooz on a used car from the guys at iMotors.com? And who needed a used car from iMotors.com when they could just sit at home and have 40-lb. bags of dog food delivered to them by a sock puppet? F'd Companies captures the waste, greed, and human stupidity of more than 100 dot-com companies. Written in Philip J. Kaplan's popular, cynical style, these profiles are filled with colorful anecdotes, factoids, and information unavailable anywhere else. Together they form a gleeful encyclopedia of how not to run a business. They also capture a truly remarkable period of history. F'd Companies is required reading for everyone involved in the "new economy" -- assuming your severance check can cover the cost.

Coding the Hypothetical

Coding the Hypothetical

$158

Conditionals encode speculation. They convey how events could have been different in the past or present, or might be different in the future if particular conditions had been or will be met. While all languages afford the means to speculate or hypothesize about possible events, the ways in which they do so vary. This work explores some of this variation through an analysis of the stucture and semantics of complex conditional sentences in Russian and Macedonian. It addresses typological questions about the general properties of natural language conditionals and examines the role of the grammatical categories tense , aspect , mood and status in the coding of conditional meaning. The book also discusses the relationship between the use of these categories and the shape of a language’s conditional system. For example, the use of tense in counterfactual contexts in Macedonian correlates with the grammaticalization of more shades of conditional meaning than are grammaticalized in Russian, which does not employ tense forms in this way. The study draws on data from a rich variety of sources and thus includes kinds of conditionals overlooked in many other studies. The book addresses issues of concern to Slavists and raises questions for those interested in conditionals and the coding of hypothetical meaning.

The book is logically divided into 5 main categories with each category representing a major skill set required by most security professionals: 1. Coding The ability to program and script is quickly becoming a mainstream requirement for just about everyone in the security industry. This section covers the basics in coding complemented with a slue of programming tips and tricks in C/C++, Java, Perl and NASL. 2. Sockets The technology that allows programs and scripts to communicate over a network is sockets. Even though the theory remains the same communication over TCP and UDP, sockets are implemented differently in nearly ever language. 3. Shellcode Shellcode, commonly defined as bytecode converted from Assembly, is utilized to execute commands on remote systems via direct memory access. 4. Porting Due to the differences between operating platforms and language implementations on those platforms, it is a common practice to modify an original body of code to work on a different platforms. This technique is known as porting and is incredible useful in the real world environments since it allows you to not recreate the wheel. 5. Coding Tools The culmination of the previous four sections, coding tools brings all of the techniques that you have learned to the forefront. Home and Work

Home and Work

$30

Do you put family photos on your desk at work? Are your home and work keys on the same chain? Do you keep one all-purpose calendar for listing home and work events? Do you have separate telephone books for colleagues and friends? In Home and Work, Christena Nippert-Eng examines the intricacies and implications of how we draw the line between home and work. Arguing that relationships between the two realms range from those that are highly "integrating" to those that are highly "segmenting," Nippert-Eng examines the ways people sculpt the boundaries between home and work. With remarkable sensitivity to the symbolic value of objects and actions, Nippert-Eng explores the meaning of clothing, wallets, lunches and vacations, and the places and ways in which we engage our family, friends, and co-workers. Commuting habits are also revealing, showing how we make the transition between home and work selves though ritualized behavior like hellos and goodbyes, the consumption of food, the way we dress, our choices of routes to and from work, and our listening, working, and sleeping habits during these journeys. The ways each of us manages time, space, and people not only reflect but reinforce lives that are more "integrating" or "segmenting" at any given time. In clarifying what we take for granted, this book will leave you thinking in different ways about your life and work.

Marketing strategies of Chinese companies

Marketing strategies of Chinese companies

$15.02

Ten or fifteen years ago global business was mainly in the hands of a select number of multinational giants. Small and medium-sized business concentrated on their home markets and perhaps one or two neighboring countries. Not so any longer. Even the smallest businesses have realized that they have something to market in distant countries. Under these circumstances, Chinese companies of all sizes in various industries have recently opened to foreign competition. According to the Chinese Commerce Ministry's new release on relevant report, the Chinese foreign investment reached a new record of 26,51 billion US-Dollars in 2007. This represented a growth of 25,3 percent compared to 2006. After the quantity expansion, the quality offensive comes silently. Today, Chinese companies throw not only millions of T-Shirts, toys or plastic bowls in the international market but also wireless LCD-televisions, telecom-equipment and precision tools as well. Chinese companies have realized that a competitive advantage based on low costs, low prices and large quantities in a global economy cannot defend itself long. Consequently, they focus consistently on innovation and brands. In addition, China's globalization also needs strong mental forces. China does not just want to be a world factory, but instead be an internationally competitive market place that Western competitors already are. In the involvement of Chinese companies abroad aimed at specific markets, several strategies are recognizable. German and European companies are facing new chances and challenges at the same time. People must correctly assess the situation and corporate strategies and business concepts, with which they respond effectively and sustainably. The following questions are the focus: In what areas and branches do Chinese companies concentrate in German market? Which Chinese companies go abroad? What are their market entry strategies? What are their competitive strategies? And what are the steps of Chinese investments? What problems in the Chinese M&A business in Germany? How to overcome or avoid them? What are other problems? What branches are suffering from Chinese competition in Germany and EU? Chances or threats? How can German companies face this shift in a global economy and respond appropriately?
